Methylchloroisothiazinolone (MCI) and Methylisothiazoinone (MI) are cosmetic preservatives that have been added to select Modere products as a replacement for the more controversial parabens. Concerns over potential skin irritation/sensitization and subsequent regulatory restrictions of MCI and MI were a result of the high doses that were used commonly in skin and hair care products in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Since that time, it has been found that MCI and MI are effective cosmetic preservatives at far lower concentrations. The Scientific Team has reviewed the use of MCI and MI in Modere products specifically and found the use level to be appropriate and should be considered safe-as-used. As with any ingredient, however, if a product user knows that they have a pre-existing sensitivity to an individual ingredient, they should avoid it (i.e. citrus oils, fragrance components, preservatives, botanicals, etc.).
Modere continuously monitors ongoing scientific literature and distributor concerns over the use of each preservative in our products. As part of the Modere commitment to the highest quality products in the Health and Wellness, Personal Care and Household categories, we are continually studying scientific evidence regarding controversial ingredients. When our scientists become aware of an ingredient with heightened controversy or substantiated potential for irritation or concern, we seek to remove that ingredient from our products.
We have been aware of the pressing controversy surrounding MI (Methylisothiazolinone) and MCI (Methylchloroisothiazolinone) as they have been identified as “potential sensitizers” to some people.
